Question of the Week #13

Welcome to the thirteenth edition of the Question of the Week! Please consider sending me your ideas for future questions :)

Do you listen to Christian music? Why or why not? Do you only listen to Christian music? Do you have any favorite artists? A favorite album? A favorite song? Which artist(s) would you recommend to others? Why?

Yes. I have always listened to Christian music. But I rarely listen to Christian radio. I do listen to Christian music though. Mostly on my iTunes. I have gone through phases where I listened to one type or genre of music more than others. But I've always loved variety. I've never listened to only Christian music.

As a little person, I'd say I grew up on Michael W. Smith and Carman. (Also Petra and Michael Card. Rich Mullins. David Meece.)
As a not-so-little person, I listened to Audio Adrenaline, Newsboys, Jars of Clay, DC Talk, etc.
Right now, I'm more into Caedmon's Call, Andrew Peterson, Casting Crowns, Chris Tomlin, etc.

Favorite Artist? Now, that would probably be Andrew Peterson.
Favorite Album? Probably Jesus Record by Rich Mullins
Favorite Song? Just As I Am by Andrew Peterson

As for recommendations, it would be too hard to just pick a few to say that you "must" like this one. It irritates me when people assume that all Christian music sounds the same. It probably means they've been listening to Christian radio. There is great variety in the field of Christian music. Not every artist will appeal to every Christian. I do think for an artist to be labeled Christian their songs should be about God, about Jesus, about living the Christian life, about faith. And I think there are some albums in Christian stores that aren't all that Christian. But that's another story!

There's a lot of cross-overs as well.

I listen to 12 Stones while my husband listens to KillSwitchEngage - most people would be frightened by the heavy music, but their "Rose of Sharyn" is Jesus singing to God and a very beautiful song.

And somewhere in my closet I've got some old Petra albums, too!

Why don't you listen to Christian radio? Just curious. I listened to Christian radio very little when I was younger, but the station where I lived was more talk than music I could relate to.

Enjoyed reading your post. :)

The only time I listen to Christian anything is on the rare occasion when I drive myself anywhere alone and I can switch to the Christian radio channel. I am very much into easy listening and ballads. Do not like heavy metal/rock or rap.

Nothing wrong with hymns and choruses either.

When I was a teen, I thought it all sounded the same--they definitely weren't playing Christian rock or anything heavy or with a beat. Now, I don't listen so much to Christian radio because most of the time I spend listening to music, I'm working on the computer and just listening to iTunes. I don't listen to any kind of radio at home. And in the car, I'm more of an oldies kinda gal :)

Hi Becky-

First off, I answered the question below this question.

I basically listen to the same music that you do. I cried my heart out when I heard that Rich Mullens was killed in downstate Peoria, Illinois. Mom came rushing in, wondering what was the matter with me, I told her and I was gently weeping throughout the church service. WMBI has some blocks of music inbetween the Christain programming and the day that Amy Grant divorced her first husband and married Vince Gill, they completely dropped her from their play list. I currently listen to two of the three Christain "stations" on SiriusXM. I do not like "heavy metal" music, which the third station plays, and The Message station, I feel, is going the same way. They play more hard rock than the easy listening music I like to listen to. So I am flipping between The Message and the Southern Gospel station that they have. Judy(IB)

Christian music probably makes up about 85% what what I listen to. I am a HUGE KLove fan, as I got to know that station when in Abq with my son last year. The first song I heard on KLove was "He's My Son" by Mark Schultz, which I absolutely love, but can't listen to anymore. It completely tell the story of my life from May to September of last year and I just can't hear it without sobbing.

Where I live though, there are no Christian radio stations, so I either listen to cd's or the ipod in the car. At home, I connect to KLove online. :)

As for what Christian music I like, I tend to learn towards the rock side. HUGE fan of Jeremy Camp, love Third Day and Tenth Avenue North, Building 429, MercyMe. I also really like Kutless and Skillet, and for my "adult contemporary" side, Mark Schultz.
