Love's Unfolding Dream. Janette Oke. 1987. Bethany House. 240 pages.
Clark and Marty's "surprise" baby, Belinda, is growing up quickly. The sixth book in Janette Oke's Love Comes Softly series focuses on the teen years of Belinda. Belinda idolizes her brother, Luke, a doctor, and the family encourages her dreams of one day becoming a nurse. One of the things Belinda gets to do--that she considers a real treat--is to assist her big brother on his rounds. Luke has promised not to knowingly take Belinda into obviously traumatic emergency situations. But it's a promise that Luke can't always keep. For example, Belinda is asked to help Luke deal with a very bad broken arm--a situation that leads to amputation. When Belinda isn't trying on the role of nurse, she enjoys spending time with her many cousins! Missie's daughter also comes for an extended stay so she can get the education she needs to be a teacher. One big "problem" in this one is when Belinda, Melissa, and Amy Jo all get a crush on the same boy.
In many ways, this is a coming-of-age story for Belinda. But readers also get a chance to see Marty and Clark be active grandparents.
