I didn't quite reach my goal of reading 100 books total, but if you count the Bibles I read, I almost made it. 

When it comes to book ratings, it was a good year. 5 books received a one star rating (5.1%). 8 books received a two star rating (8.1%). 18 books received a three star rating (18.2). And I had equal amounts of four and five stars! (34.3% each) Thirty-four books each!!!

14. Giant Print ESV


ESV Giant Print Bible (ISBN 13: 978-1-4335-2722-7) 2011/2001. 1984 pages. [Source: Gift]

First sentence: In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

I am only counting the ESV Bible once this year though technically I've read it twice. I started out the year using the ESV Bible app to read the Daily M'Cheyne plan. Though I had read this plan before--using a physical Bible--I wanted to give the plan a second year. Unfortunately, I did not click with the plan this year. Like at all. I found myself skimming most of the time. (Hence why I am not going to count this time through the Word of God.) I am definitely not going to be using this plan next year. 

BUT though that seems to have been a fail, I picked up the ESV Giant Print Bible in early November (November 9 to be precise) to use with the Book of Common Prayer's Daily Office. I was not following the lectionary. I was reading two lessons an office, three offices a day. So while I thought it would take me several months--closer to 90 days--to get through this one, I found myself finishing up the last week of the year. (Technically, I have one book left--the book of Hosea--but since I've read it with the M'Cheyne plan earlier AND since I have every intention in the world of finishing it in the ESV Giant Print Bible today or tomorrow, I'm posting my review today. 

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this Bible. I do. I loved the giant print font. I love that it's double column. I love that it's black letter. I love how it lays flat. It's been a joy to read through this one using the Daily Office from the Book of Common Prayer. I was able to read through the Old Testament once and the parts of the New Testament twice. (All four gospels were read twice. Some of the letters as well. Galatians and Hebrews seemed to be favorites that I kept returning to.)

  • In November I continued the ESV M'Cheyne reading plan using the ESV app. 
  • In November I began reading the ESV Giant Print Bible with the Daily Office from the Book of Common Prayer.
  • In November, I began reading the Wycliffe Bible (with modern spelling).
  • In November I continued using the Lexham English Bible to read the New Testament in 30 days. 
  • In November I read Matthew 25-28 thirty times.
  • In November I read Psalms 131-150 thirty times.
  • In November I began reading the NKJV with the Professor Horner plan. (I'm on the fence if I want to continue with this.)

  • In October, I continued to read the HCSB using a very modified Professor Horner plan.
  • In October, I finished three Bibles: the 1537 Thomas Matthew Bible, the Berean Study Bible, and the King James Version. 
  • In October, I began reading the Jubilee translation using the Power 60 reading plan on YouVersion. I am currently in Psalms.
  • In October, I continued the ESV M'Cheyne reading plan using the ESV app. 
  • In October, I used the Shred Bible reading plan (30 day plan) to read through most of the RSV Schuyler. (I still haven't read the apocrypha yet.)
  • In October, I started the New Testament in 90 Days plan using the Lexham English Bible.

September Reflections

Bible Reading
  • In September, I read Psalm 119 thirty days in a row.
  • In September, I read Malachi thirty days in a row.
  • In September, I continued to read the HCSB using a very modified Professor Horner plan.
  • In September, I finished the 1611 KJV. 
  • In September, I began reading the 1537 Thomas Matthew Bible. I've read Genesis through Ezekiel! Not bad for one month's work!!!
  • In September, I continued reading the Power 60 reading plan in the BSB on the YouVersion app. I am a dozen plus days ahead of the plan. I've read Genesis through John 5.
  • In September, I continued the ESV M'Cheyne reading plan using the ESV app. (I did in August too, but somehow didn't list it????)
  • In September, I read some in the KJV. This is a paragraph bible with NO verse numbers. I love and adore it so, so, so much. It's from a smaller publishing house, but the quality is outstanding.
  • In September, (well the last week of September) I began using the Daily Office from the Book of Common Prayer.

In August I read Psalms 107-118 thirty days in a row.
In August I finished reading the NASB 2020 using a very modified Professor Horner plan.
In August I began reading the HCSB using a very modified Professor Horner plan.
In August I finished the Old Testament in the 1611 KJV and made good progress in the New Testament. (I think I'll be finishing it in a week or possibly two.)
In August I began the Power 60 reading plan in the BSB on the YouVersion app.

May Reflections


May 2021 Bible Reading
  • In May I read Matthew 9-12 thirty times
  • In May I read Psalm 42-72 thirty times. (If I *ever* do this again, I will never break it up like this again)
  • In May I continued using the ESV Bible app to read the M'Cheyne Bible reading plan.
  • In May I finished the NIV Reader's Bible mainly using the revised Horner reading plan (greatly modified)
  • In May I used the Bible in 90 Days plan to read the NRSV. I have read Genesis through Ezekiel. (I started this plan in April.)
  • I have continued to do a little here and there reading in several other Bibles including the KJV, the NASB Schuyler, and the LSB.
  • I made a second revision (or is it the third??) of the Horner system. I have ten mostly new categories. (The only thing I really kept the same were the bookmarks for Psalms AND the books of the law (Genesis - Deuteronomy). I am starting the Horner system again for the NASB 2020 BIBLE. I am using the Large Print Thinline edition of the NASB 2020.
  • In May the Facebook group, Psalms: Life From God's Heart, began reading Psalms. (3 a week). I am a moderator.

April Reflections


2021 Bible Reading

  • In April I read Ruth thirty times
  • In April I read Psalms 27-41 thirty times
  • In April I finished the NASB Giant Print Reference Bible
  • In April I continued to use the ESV app to read the M'Cheyne reading plan
  • In April I completely redid how I organized the Horner bookmarks and switched from NASB (which I finished) to the NIV Readers Bible.
  • In April I received three new Bibles. (see below)
  • In April I was totally overwhelmed by the number of translations I had going at once: KJV, 1611 KJV (I finished 1 Samuel), NRSV, NIV, NASB Schuyler, LSB. I am reading a little here and there in all these translations. Because my reading is more scattered than not--although I am keeping lists--it's not easy to recall off the top of my head what books I've read in what translation. So I won't be sharing detailed lists in this post. 
  • In April I did start the Bible in 90 days plan (with modifications) using the NRSV translation.

  • In March I continued using the ESV app to read the M'Cheyne reading plan
  • In March I continued reading the NASB Giant Print Reference Bible using the Horner system; I completely changed up the ten lists the last week of March. (I wrote a post about it here). 
  • In March I started the 1611 KJV Bible. I've read Genesis through Ruth. 
  • In March I started the KJV (I got a new Bible!!!) I've read Genesis, 1 Chronicles, Matthew, James, 1 and 2 Peter, I believe.

February 2021 Reflections

2021 Bible Reading
  • In February I read Matthew 1-4 for 30 days.
  • In February I read Psalm 9-16 for 30 days.
  • In February I continued my Bible in 90 days plan with the 1560 Geneva Bible. (I am about three days away from finishing!!!)
  • In February I FINISHED the NASB 1973 Bible. It turned out not so much the Bible in 90 Days plan but the Bible in 82 day plan.
  • In February I used the ESV Bible app to the M'Cheyne reading plan.
  • In February I used Professor Horner's Bible reading plan in the NASB Giant Print Reference Bible. I am now reading multiple chapters per day in most of the ten sections--mainly in the OT sections excluding Proverbs of course). 
  • In February I received two new Bibles!!!!

January 2021 Reflections


Verses on my heart/mind

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6

Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the LORD that will stand. Proverbs 19:21

Be angry, and do not sin; ponder in your own hearts on your beds and be silent. Psalm 4:4

For you are not a God who delights in wickedness; evil may not dwell with you. The boastful shall not stand before your eyes; you hate all evildoers. Psalm 5:4-5

See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone. Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophecies, but test everything; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil. 1 Thessalonians 5:15-22

But let none of you suffer as a murderer or a thief or an evildoer or as a meddler. Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in that name. 1 Peter 4:15-16

If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, "Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord." Romans 12:18-19

Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval...Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God's wrath but also for the sake of conscience. Romans 13:1-5. (The verse I skipped was Romans 13:4 if you want to read it.)


First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 1 Timothy 2:1-4

  • In January I continued my Bible in 90 days plan with the NASB 1973 Bible
  • In January I used the ESV Bible app to do the M'Cheyne reading plan.
  • In January I used Professor Horner's Bible reading plan in the NASB Giant Print Reference Bible. 
At first I wasn't in love with Professor Horner's system. I thought it was strange. I even wrote a blog post about it. But I gave it more time, and now I'm seeing that while incomplete on its own, working within a larger system, it is a great thing.
